The Hollywood Chamber is proud to announce that the late John Denver will be honored posthumously with the 2,531st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. PDT.

The star will be located at 7065 Hollywood Boulevard. “We are proud to honor one of America’s singing icons who has been missed for many years. Luckily for us we have his amazing music to remember him by,” stated Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Leron Gubler. Helping Gubler to unveil the star in the category of Recording will be two of Denver’s three children, Zak Deutschendorf and Jesse Belle Denver, who will accept the honor on behalf of the family. The Band Trampled by Turtles will be performing an acoustic version of Denver’s song “Annie’s Song. The band is in town for their performance that evening at the Fonda Theatre the evening of the star ceremony.

In celebration of John Denver’s recording career, a new Box set titled All of My Memories: The John Denver Collection will be released on November 4, through RCA/Legacy Recordings, a Division of Sony Music Entertainment. The deluxe 90-song, 4 CD set box set is a first comprehensive multi-label overview to span 1964 to 1997, including six previously unreleased tracks, demos, promo rarities, live performances, limited edition and private pressings, and more. Special guest performers include the Mitchell Trio, Olivia Newton-John, Sylvie Vartan, Placido Domingo, Emmylou Harris, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the Muppets and others.

One of the world’s best-known and most-loved performers, Denver earned international acclaim as a songwriter, performer, actor, environmentalist and humanitarian. Denver’s career spanned four decades and his music has outlasted countless musical trends and garnered numerous awards and honors.

Denver’s artistic journey began at age eleven when he was given his grandmother’s guitar. He eventually took guitar lessons and joined a boys’ choir, which led him at age twenty to pursue his dream of a career in music. In 1963 he struck out on his own, moving to Los Angeles to be in the heart of the burgeoning music scene. It was during this time that Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. was urged by friends to change his name if a recording career were to be in his future. He took his stage name from the beautiful capital city of his favorite state, Colorado. Later in life, Denver and his family settled in Aspen, Colorado and his love for the Rocky Mountains inspired many of his songs.

Denver experienced his first major break in the music industry when he was chosen from 250 other hopefuls as lead singer for the popular Mitchell Trio. He gained recognition when his song “Leaving On A Jet Plane” was recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, becoming their first and only number one hit. When the Mitchell Trio disbanded, Denver was climbing up the pop charts as a solo act with such songs as “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Rocky Mountain High,” “Sunshine On My Shoulders,” “Annie’s Song,” “Back Home Again,” “Thank God I’m A Country Boy,” and “Calypso,” solidifying his position as one of the top stars of the 1970s.

By his third album in 1970, Denver’s social and political leanings were defined more clearly. Denver was one of the first artists to share an environmental message through his musicwith such songs as “Rocky Mountain High” and “Whose Garden Was This.”

Denver was also the first artist from the West to do a multi-city tour of mainland China, in October 1992. He was somewhat astonished to discover how popular and well-known his songs were in China. “‘Country Roads,’” he was told, “is the most famous song written in the West.”

Among Denver’s many gifts, he was a talented photographer. “Sweet, Sweet Life: The Photographic Works of John Denver” represents a chance for the world to experience life as John Denver lived it. Throughout his lifetime, Denver captured thousands of images as he traveled across the globe, spreading his message of peace, love, and conservation. Through his mastery of composition, lighting, and the decisive moment, Denver became an accomplished photographer. Substrate Gallery in Hollywood is proud to present over 40 never-before-seen photographs of distinction from the celebrated musician from October 24th to November 23rd. The Gallery will be showing and selling limited editions of Denver’s personal photography, as curated by representatives of The John Denver Estate and Ramses Granados from the Substrate Fine Art Gallery. The public is invited to join in on taking a rare and unique look into the artist’s life, mind and heart!

Denver contributed his talents to the benefit of many charitable and environmental causes and received numerous civic and humanitarian awards over the years. Fans responded to his heartfelt urgings about ecology, peace, and compassion that were consistently delivered in a gentle manner on his records and at live performances.

The world was left in shock when it was announced that John Denver died tragically in a plane crash on October 12, 1997. On March 12, 2007, Colorado’s Senate passed a resolution to make Denver’s trademark 1972 hit “Rocky Mountain High” one of the state’s two official state songs, and on March 7, 2014, West Virginia’s Senate passed a resolution to make “Take Me Home, Country Roads” one of their state’s two official state songs.

Today, millions of fans old and new enjoy the work of this extraordinary performer. Thirty albums and four decades after he began, John Denver’s music is as relevant as ever. His humanitarian work continues to strengthen our global village, and his dynamic celebration of life, spirit and nature is a powerful inspiration to us all.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that they will be honoring the multi-platinum selling, award-winning performers New Kids on The Block with the 2,530th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. The star will be located at 7072 Hollywood Boulevard. “Fans have been asking for quite a while now when the New Kids on The Block were going to get their star. We want to thank them for “Hangin’ Tough” for waiting patiently to hear the announcement of their favorite boy band star ceremony,” stated Ana Martinez, producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies. “Since then, fans from all over the United States and the world have been booking flights to get to Hollywood for this special day!” Helping Emcee and Hollywood Chamber President/CEO, Leron Gubler to unveil the star in the category of Recording will be Arsenio Hall.

New Kids on The Block was formed in 1984 in Boston, Massachusetts. Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood signed with Columbia Records and their first album entitled “New Kids on The Block” was released. Their popularity grew with the releases “Hanging Tough” and “Please Don’t Go Girl.” The following year the New Kids were touring the country and their songs were reaching the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Charts. In 1990, the group won two American Music Awards and earned a Grammy nomination. By 1994, the group disbanded and went their own ways. By that time, they had sold 80 million albums, shattered concert box office records playing an estimated 200 concerts a year worldwide and grossed more than one billion dollars. They achieved five platinum albums, ten top 10 singles, and five No. 1 singles.

After 15 years out of the spotlight, the 21st century saw the boys from Boston stage one of the biggest and most anticipated reunions of all time. In 2008, they officially revealed their return on The Today Show. An enormous crowd gathered at Rockefeller Center for their first comeback performance, and everything snowballed once again from that magical moment.

Their long-awaited fifth album, “The Block,” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200. Galvanized with new tunes including hot collaborations with Lady Gaga and Ne-Yo and an undeniably impressive modern stage show, “the guys now,” as Wahlberg puts it, reclaimed their spot at the top of modern pop. It certainly would’ve been easy for the five-some to simply careen along on past glories.

New Kids on the Block have sold more than 80 million albums worldwide and dominated airwaves with a bevy of hits such as “You Got It (The Right Stuff)”, “Cover Girl,” “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time),” “Hangin’ Tough.” “I’ll Be Loving You.” “Step By Step,” and “Tonight.”

Not to mention, in the early ’90s, the band had smashed box office records performing 200 concerts per year at stadiums across the globe and were named “highest paid entertainers of 1990” by Forbes Magazine. However, they weren’t content to simply rest on their laurels in the '00s. Instead, they upped the ante immensely with a series of career firsts over two decades into their illustrious legacy.

Since reuniting, the band has gone on to tour to sold out arenas worldwide.  One of those sold out tours even included a once in a lifetime stop at Fenway Park.  The Boston pop icons brought their brainchild NKOTBSB to the famed stadium as part of the historic NKOTBSB Tour. Selling out 140 arena shows on their reunion jaunt and numerous co-headline dates, the Fenway Park gig remains a high watermark for the group.

In April 2013, New Kids released their sixth studio album 10, which debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart. Following the release, they co-headlined The Package Tour along with 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men. The wildly successful tour spanned nearly 50 shows across North America before concluding in August 2013. Most recently, NKOTB completed the New Kids On The Block After Dark, the exclusive four day engagement at The AXIS in Las Vegas from July 10-13. The four incredible shows were part of the ultimate Vegas weekend that included concerts, pool parties and after parties – and were the exclusive North American tour dates in 2014.

In the midst of it all, New Kids On The Block always find time to continually give back. In 2009, the guys and their fans started supporting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. Since then, they’ve collectively raised in excess of $200,000 towards finding a cure for breast cancer. Fans continue to host fundraisers and jumpstart events like “Race for the Cure” and “3-Day for the Cure” teams furthering the cause. After losing his mother to the disease, Wood created “Remember Betty” to celebrate her memory. Their charitable pursuits extend even farther. Supporting Toys For Tots in 2010, they put on an intimate show at the Boston House of Blues, and the hometown gig sold out in a matter of minutes and raised over $60,000 for the charity.

There are even more firsts on the horizon for New Kids On The Block though, and they've still got "the right stuff" after all these years.

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Statement on
Garcetti Minimum Wage Proposal

HOLLYWOOD – September 23, 2014 – When the City Council announced its intention to consider a $15.37 minimum wage for hotel workers, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce opposed this action stating that rather than singling out one industry we should engage in a broad discussion of the minimum wage for all workers. Since Mayor Garcetti’s announcement of his minimum wage proposal, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has been soliciting input from its members and others throughout the region. We are prepared to devote time and resources to be an engaged participant in a thoughtful and comprehensive discussion of any minimum wage proposal.

The Chamber agrees with the Mayor’s philosophy that no person working full time should be living in poverty. We additionally find it appalling that Los Angeles leads the nation in its poverty rate.  The Chamber whole-heartedly agrees that poverty in Los Angeles needs to be addressed. We are concerned that the Mayor’s proposal, goes too far, too fast for the retail and restaurant industries in our City as well as many of our vital non-profit organizations that will bear the brunt of the increase.

The Chamber believes any discussion of wage increases must be one part of a larger plan with concrete steps to grow our economy, increase private sector jobs, and bring new businesses to Los Angeles.

The Chamber conditionally supports an increase in the City wide minimum wage but is adamant that such an increase be coupled with several policy changes aimed at mitigating the negative effects that the proposed minimum wage increase will  have on the Los Angeles business community and the ability to grow a strong base of new jobs in the City.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce support for a minimum wage increase is contingent upon the following:

  1. Provide a Longer Phase in period to get to $13.25 Minimum Wage

There are tremendous ancillary costs associated with any wage increase.  Businesses will have to absorb the additional increases in payroll taxes, workers compensation insurance, and unemployment insurance, to name a few.  These increased taxes are not part of the City wage increase per se, but nonetheless create an insurmountable situation for many of our businesses who are barely surviving in today’s Los Angeles business climate.

The Hollywood Chamber asks the phase in of a wage increase be extended until at least 2020 to give businesses adequate time to plan and hopefully better absorb the impacts that will come with the increase.  The State minimum wage will be increasing to $10 an hour on January 1, 2016.  This means Angelenos will already be adjusting to a $2 an hour wage increase in a two-year period.

  1. Need for Immediate and Comprehensive Reform of the LA Business Tax

The Chamber is extremely concerned about the effects that the Mayor’s proposal, will have on the business competitiveness of L.A.  To mitigate the adverse impacts of the wage increase policy we ask that any increase in the City’s minimum wage be accompanied by a simultaneous plan to aggressively reduce and reform the LA Business Tax.

The most visible and potent of the identified barriers to job creation is L.A.’s gross receipts tax.  We ask that the Council immediately adopt reform measures comparable to what had previously been recommended by the Mayor’s Business Tax Advisory Council which calls for a phased and prudent elimination of the gross receipts tax with checkpoints along the way to ensure no disruptive impacts to the City’s general fund revenues.

  1. A Complete Withdrawal of the Hotel Minimum Wage Ordinance

The Chamber maintains that an industry-specific minimum wage aimed at LA’s hospitality industry is bad policy.  In light of the desire for a city-wide increase in minimum wage, we ask that city leaders oppose any further calls for an increase in hotel wage rates, above and beyond what is established for the City’s minimum wage.

  1. A Commitment from the City to Advocate for changes to the State’s Tip Earner Policies

Tipped wage earners such as those employed at restaurants and hotels typically already earn significantly more than the minimum wage once tips have been factored in. Current State law requires that employers pay taxes on all the tips their employees receive, although it is not income to the establishment.

While we recognize that tipped wage earners cannot be carved-out of the minimum wage ordinances because of the current California law, it is imperative that the City Council officially advocate at the State level for the adoption of new rules, more friendly to all California business, which would eliminate the required employer payroll taxes on tipped earnings.

  1. Carve-Out for Non-profit organizations

A hike in the minimum wage could leave many of our non-profit organizations unable to perform their work in the community.  The Chamber asks that City Council provide specific language to exempt non-profit organizations from the minimum wage ordinance.

The Chamber applauds and encourages the City as it continually strives to better the quality of life for all Angelenos.  We are confident that there is a reasonable path forward that will both provide for a living wage for all Angelenos while simultaneously striking a balance with the need for improving our economic competitiveness and ensuring job growth for Los Angeles.  The Chamber looks forward to working with city leaders in a creating a strong and thriving LA economy that benefits all Angelenos.

Hollywood Chamber to honor Phil Hartman Posthumously with Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that the late Phil Hartman will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, August 26, at 11:30 a.m. The star will be unveiled at one of Hartman’s favorite Tinseltown stores, The Hollywood Toy & Costume shop. “Phil Hartman was very loved by Hollywood and we are thrilled that he is being honored with his own star. This man made millions laugh for years and will always be treasured,” stated Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. Helping Leron Gubler to unveil the star will be Kevin Nealon and Betty McCann at 6600 Hollywood Boulevard in the category of Television. Accepting the star will be Phil’s brother John Hartmann.

Philip Edward “Phil” Hartman (September 24, 1948 ~ May 28, 1998; born Hartmann) was a Canadian American actor, comedian, screenwriter and graphic artist. Born in Brantford, Ontario, Hartman and his family moved to the United States when he was 10. After graduating from California State University, Northridge, with a degree in graphic arts, he designed album covers for bands such as Poco and America. Feeling the need for a more creative outlet, Hartman joined the comedy group The Groundlings in 1975 and helped comedian Paul Reubens develop his character Pee-wee Herman. Hartman co-wrote the screenplay for the film “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and made recurring appearances on Reubens’ show “Pee-wee's Playhouse.”

Hartman became famous in the late 1980s when he joined the sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live.” He won fame for his impressions, particularly of President Bill Clinton, and he stayed on the show for eight seasons. He was given the moniker “The Glue” for his ability to hold the show together and help other cast members. In 1989, Hartman won a Primetime Emmy Award for his “SNL” work. In 1995, after scrapping plans for his own variety show, he starred as Bill McNeal in the NBC sitcom “NewsRadio.” He had frequent roles on “The Simpsons” as Lionel Hutz, Troy McClure, and others, and appeared in the films “Houseguest,” “Sgt. Bilko,” “Jingle All the Way” and “Small Soldiers.”

Sadly, Phil Hartman passed away in 1998. The authorized biography of Hartman titled “You Might Remember Me: The Life and Times of Phil Hartman” written by Mikel Thomas will be released on September 23, 2014 by St. Martin’s Press. A CD “Phil Hartman’s Flat TV” is available via George Carlin’s record label at www.laugh.com.

Emcee Leron Gubler and guest speakers TBA will be on hand to unveil the star for Los Tigres Del Norte in the category of Recording. The star ceremony will be streamed live exclusively on www.walkoffame.com.

During the early ’70s, Los Tigres became the first act signed to Fama Records. Founded by Art Walker, Fama grew to become the leading Spanish-language record label on the West Coast. Walker, a local impresario, first heard the group on a live radio presentation recorded at the local Parque de las Flores on Keyes Street in San Jose, and impressed with what he heard, he decided to make them the foundation of Fama. With his guidance, Los Tigres adopted an electric style, trading in their traditional acoustic sound for one incorporating bass, drums, and electric guitar. The group also adopted a modern approach to songwriting, emphasizing contemporary social themes common to Mexican-Americans.

In the 1980s, Los Tigres moved to Fonovisa Records and furthered their success. Beginning with Jaula De Oro (1984), the group would regularly top the regional Mexican album chart stateside, and this success was acknowledged in 1987 when they won the initial Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Performance, for Gracias America…..Sin Fronteras (1986).

In the diverse world of Latin music, the Regional Mexican genre alone accounts for more than half of all music sales, according to Billboard. This popular genre outpaces the combined sales of Pop, Rock, Tropical, Urban and all other styles, and Los Tigres Del Norte are the undisputed legends of the genre.

The group has more than 500 recorded songs to their credit. Los Tigres del Norte have sold more than 37 million albums worldwide, notching 22 No. 1 albums and more than 50 No. 1 singles. The group has received countless Platinum records and numerous awards including six Grammy and six Latin Grammys, the Latin Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and The Hispanic Heritage “Legends” Awardat The Kennedy Center. They won multiple Premio Lo Nuestro awards, and are the recipients of the BMI ICON Award.

Their unrivaled career spans four decades. Los Tigrescontinues to be at the forefront of Latin music popularity performing regularly to sold-out audiences. Los Tigres Del Norte songs debut at No. 1 on the charts with each album and single they release.

They continue to blaze new trails for the genre and achieve new milestones. In 2013, they were joined by numerous members of Congress at the massive “Camino Americano: Rally & March for Immigrant Dignity & Respect” at the National Mall in Washington, DC. In 2011, the band was featured in “MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres Del Norte & Friends,” the first album to be dedicated to the Regional Mexican genre. The album quickly became a commercial success and went on to earn a rare Diamond sales certification. In 2010, the group headlined Mexico’s Historic Bicentennial Celebration. The group recently released the eagerly-awaited new single La Bala (The Bullet) which is their first new studio recording in four years, and the first advance release of a highly-anticipated new album arriving in October.

Their long-standing career has also garnered the band numerous accolades. Del Norte is the first Mexican group to sing in Spanish on the American Music Awards. The band received The Smithsonian Legacy Award, and were the subject of a Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibit entitled “Corridos Sin Fronteras.” The Spanish group headlined one of the largest concerts in Los Angeles history drawing over 200,000 fans and also performed to a sold-out audience at Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles. Del Norte also appeared in more than 15 films, including Sundance Favorite ‘La Misma Luna’.

In 2000, Los Tigres Del Norte institutionalized their charitable efforts by establishing the Los Tigres Del Norte Foundation to further the appreciation and understanding of Hispanic music, culture, and history through education and community outreach programs. The Foundation donated $500,000 to UCLA’s Chicano Studies Center to create and preserve The Frontera Collection of Mexican and Mexican American Recordings, the world’s largest collection of historical Mexican music recordings. The band also opened a music school for children in need in their home state of Sinaloa, Mexico. These days. Del Norte are staple performers for USO programs to entertain troops abroad in Japan, Korea, Germany and Italy.

The Foundation will honor the incomparable Judge Judy Sheindlin with the distinguished Mary Pickford Award. The Mary Pickford Award is presented to a woman who has demonstrated a commitment to the mentorship of women in the workplace, displayed innovative leadership, been a role model in pursuing a vision or challenge with tangible results, and who has made significant contributions to community service. “We can’t think of anyone who better epitomizes what Mary Pickford stood for than Judge Judy Sheindlin,” said Cindy Braun.  “She took her common-sense approach to legal issues as a family court judge and transitioned to TV judge and has made a significant impact on her community and the nation to become one of Hollywood’s most successful and beloved television stars.”

Judge Sheindlin holds court as presiding judge on “Judge Judy,” the number one first-run syndicated, Emmy Award-winning program, now in its 18th season. She began her career in family court in 1972 in New York. A swift decision-maker, she earned a reputation as one of New York’s most effective judges, hearing more than 20,000 cases during her career. Judge Sheindlin is credited with pioneering an “open court policy” that allowed the public and the media to view her day-to-day proceedings.

She was the subject of an L.A. Times article in February 1993, which soon led to a segment on the popular “60 Minutes” newsmagazine show. After her appearance, Judge Sheindlin was approached about the possibility of presiding over real cases with real consequences in a television courtroom. She retired from the bench in February 1996, and “Judge Judy” premiered in national syndication later that year.

She is the author of several Best-Selling books, including “Don’t Pee On My Leg and Tell Me It’s Raining”, Beauty Fades, Dumb Is Forever”, “Win or Lose By How You Choose”, “You Can’t Judge A Book By Its Cover”, and “Keep It Simple Stupid: You’re Smarter Than You Look”.

In 2006, Judge Sheindlin received a Star on the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame. Other honors include the Gracie Allen Tribute Award from American Women in Radio and Television being inducted into the “Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame.” Additionally, VH1 named her one of the “200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons.”
